🔥 Light Twerkerz: When and how did you meet Light Twerkerz?

📣 APOLLO: I’m going to say it was at my first Bass Coast fest in 2017. Friends and I stumbled upon a twerkshop, and we all fell in love with the incredible positive energy and inclusive vibes they brought!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe your connection with the group?

📣 APOLLO: I guess my real connection to the group started years earlier when Blondtron asked if I’d do a remix for one of her singles. Was very happy to see that released in 2021! 

The initial idea to start a new project (which eventually became APOLLO) struck during that same Bass Coast, at a main stage set by Blondtron and Waspy. A very wild and hype performance with big visuals, dancers/twerkers, aerial performers - it all started me thinking about what I might do if I had access to a stage and production that size. Inspiring stuff!

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is your personal background? Any cultural traditions related to booty shaking that have influenced you?

📣 APOLLO: From what I’ve heard, we’ve got a great great grandpa from Denmark who traveled to San Fran looking for some gold rush action in 1849— I don’t think that struck, so he ended up on a farm in Saskatchewan. Then I’ve got other family from Ireland and Wales. I feel pretty disconnected from my ancestors/cultural background, so I’ve always had some gaps to try and fill on my own. 

 

In terms of my connection to twerk culture— I was just another 90s kid brought up on Much Music and MTV rap and hip hop videos, listening to Missy Elliott and Ciara with my sister in the car. She also brought me to a Big Freedia concert when I was younger, and I fell in love with her stage energy and the whole performance, lots of twerking too. But ya, still much to learn!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?

📣 APOLLO: A tight group of interdimensional guides, sent here to liberate hips, spread self-love and body positivity :) 

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: If you were sharing this DJ mix to someone you were crushing on, how would you describe it to them?

📣 APOLLO: I’d say this one’s full of everything I love, so it might help you get to know me ;)

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience? 

📣 APOLLO: I don’t know if I’ve hit a “twerkthrough” level experience yet, but I have faith in the process! I will say that I really believe in strengthening our connections with our physical bodies through dance and other forms of movement/play (whatever form that looks like). It’s one of the many things that makes me feel grateful to be alive and to have a body! 

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is the most butt-tastic dancefloor activity you’ve ever witnessed while DJing?

📣 APOLLO: It would be a close tie between a club wide conga line and a break circle where I witnessed a flawless bucket hat head spin. 

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?

📣 APOLLO: I’ve really enjoyed the other Lit Mixes released over the years (check them out ;)), between that and all the love and respect I have for the crew and their mission - I just wanted to bring the hype and in the most self-indulgent way I could - just like how I’d guess people feel when they’re twerking!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What kind of butt do you have?

📣 APOLLO: I’ve had people tell me I have a “cute butt”, I should probably check out my own ass more often, then I could speak to its status more eloquently - but for now I’ll be content with having a cute one.  

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have a favorite booty type? Kindly explain...

📣 APOLLO: I’m just happy to have one, happy that other people are happy to have them. I think “ass that don’t quit” is probably the ultimate booty compliment, so whatever those are would be my favourite.  

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ?

📣 APOLLO: It’s a floor that not only welcomes self-expression but inspires and pulls it out of you! Like, that train is leaving the station and I want to be on it!

 

🔥 Light Twerkerz: What's your favorite booty music to DJ?

📣 APOLLO: I love messing with half’ing and double’ing tempos in a mix. If someone can rock half time to some wild percussive techno or 2step/footwork - or go double time to some trip-hop or wavy RnB. It’s all an interpretive and creative space to explore! 🍑
