LiT MIX 022 :: Jennay Badger
We are blowing 2020 a sweet goodbye kiss with Jennay Badger LiT MIX 022, the uplifting diva house and booty bass soundtrack perfect to ring in the new year disco ball dropping to the floor.
Jennay is a doubly-talented dancer/DJ who lights up any room she’s performing in, representing as founder of Vancouver Island’s Influx Dance crew. We have big love for Jennay’s work as a body positivity and gender inclusivity advocate in the dance community, and much respect for her keen ear and smooth skills on the decks.
With selections ranging from classic disco and soulful house to booty bass and jersey club, you can hear and really feel the musical progression throughout the set as it builds from cute and sweet to swaggy and ratchet, melodic throughout over that sustained untz untz percussive momentum that keeps us moving nonstop.
On repeat we love u Jennayyyyyyy
:: INTERVIEW ::
🔥 Light Twerkerz: When and how did you meet Light Twerkerz?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: My first encounter was through social media. Soon after we met at one of my DJ gigs, where I DJ’d and danced during my performance. After my show I was greeted and had an uplifting conversation about being a female in the industry of dancing and DJing.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe your connection with Light Twerkerz?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: I connect through my own personal experiences and beliefs behind dance and the body positive movement. My image for Influx Dance came from a place of inclusive body and gender acceptance. There was nothing like this in that space on Vancouver Island at the time, and I had been discriminated over my size as a dancer again and again. I wanted to give and share my platform to dancers of all shapes and sizes. This made me feel instant love, light respect for the Light Twerkerz. The work that they do has elevated in the years I have been following them and they are a constant inspiration to me and ALL the masses!
🔥 Light Twerkerz: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Light Twerkerz are a dance team representing love and light through positive affirmation of self image, self love and twerking realness.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: How did you first discover twerking?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Oooofff, I’ve been twerking my whole life (as far as my memory can follow). My mother was and is a huge inspiration to me through dance and music, she didn’t shelter me from music as a child and let me express myself freely from a young age. I was highly influenced by rnb, rap and hip hop culture.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience? (booty movement-related mind-body epiphany)
📣 JENNAY BADGER: When I dance I feel most confident in my body, mind and spirit. There’s something about movement that makes us light up and shine so bright even in our darkest moments. My most recent experience with this was this morning actually. It’s a beautiful day this morning and the energy charge from the sun I felt in my body. I slept in for the first time in weeks, had a bath then a cold shower and I decided I was going to put some makeup on and jump into my new Victoria Secret set (which I feel fantastic in). I looked in the mirror and started feeling my insecurities surface. My bits have gotten much softer through this pandemic and feelings of guilt, defeat and self disappointment started to set in. As I looked in the mirror my perspective started to change as one of my favorite songs started to play: Moving On by Roosevelt. I started to dance. I felt happy, confident and joy, love for this body that protects and carries me through life, with unconditional love. What matters is, is that I have been doing my best to keep my body and mind healthy. Yoga, cold showers, meditation, journaling, dancing, cooking for myself, trying new recipes. These are all great things and just because my body is going through changes does not discredit all the self work I have done and continue to do. Self love isn’t just something you’re born with, not a single person loves themselves 100% of the time. It’s something you work at and learn.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What is the most butt-tastic dancefloor activity you’ve ever witnessed while DJing?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Every single influx member shaking their bootys infront of my decks at same timeeeeeee!
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: The ASSpiration was a empowered FEEL GOOD, UPLIFTING, FEMME vibe, music that allows you to booty bounce and move your body in a more “sassy whacking” manner ;) I went back and forth a few times on what sound I wanted to bring forward because I am versatile when switching between my love for house music and rnb/808/low end bass, for this I wanted to stay true to my love for each.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What kind of butt do you have?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: A good one, she thiiiiiiiic.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: Do you have a favorite booty type? Kindly explain...
📣 JENNAY BADGER: All booties are good booties!
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Somewhere where people can let loose be themselves free from judgment.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What’s your favorite booty music to DJ?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Hip hop, female anthems, jersey club, house, booty breaks, trap, 808 and bass.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: What inspires you to move your butt as a dancer?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Literally everything in life, the dark and light moments in between. This is my THERAPY.
🔥 Light Twerkerz: Are there any affiliations (labels, crews, blogs, etc…) that we should list/link you with when promoting this mix?
📣 JENNAY BADGER: Shout out to all the supporters, Influx, D-blok Studios (Miss this fam so hard) & a big AYYYY to Light Twerkerz for having me be a part of their mix series. I feel honored to provide da boootaaay beats! Thank you. 🍑
