🔥Light Twerkerz: How did you meet Light Twerkerz? 

📣D Big Kitty: At Alberta Electronic Music Conference, November 2019.

 

🔥LiT: How would you describe your connection with the group?

📣DBK: Bumping and virtual! 

 

🔥LiT: How would you describe Light Twerkerz to your parents?

📣DBK: I would say it's about shaking what your momma gave you. You know, elevating consciousness by the movement of your booty. That's exactly how I would say it. 

 

🔥LiT: If you were sharing this DJ mix to someone you were crushing on, how would you describe it to them?

📣DBK: You need to feel this music inside. I would say it's a bumpin’ good mix of a time and you need to bump and twerk to it.

 

🔥LiT: What is your personal cultural background? Any specific cultural traditions related to booty-shaking that have influenced you?

📣DBK: I think because I'm Nigerian and there's a huge influence of booty shaking and hip movements incorporated in the way that we dance. Maybe not particularly to my tribe but we do have a bit of a bounce that we do in Afrobeats and Afro related sounds. In relation to Light Twerkerz I'd say, you know just the overall Afro/Afrobeats moments that we're going through is a big booty shaking situation that influences me. 

 

🔥LiT: How did you first discover twerking?

📣DBK: I went to Pop Montreal in 2009 and Big Freedia had a workshop. And that was where I first learned about twerking. She was my instructor. Yeah she's the OG.

 

🔥LiT: Have you ever had a “twerkthrough” experience? (booty movement-related mind-body epiphany)

📣DBK: One day I took this really bomb ass picture of my booty, pushing myself to further accept my being, and I was pretty into it you know!  It was a moment for me. I got in my booty bag, and my girl Teafannie pointed it out a little while ago when we were working on our single Ladies of the Jam. You know self acceptance, that's the booty money moment, it's a good booty moment you know. I shook my booty through it. I was like, “If I don't accept my booty, who will?” 

 

🔥LiT: What is the most butt-tastic dancefloor activity you’ve ever witnessed while DJing?

📣DBK: I think watching my partner on the dance floor is just pretty much damn butt-tastic, yeah… I love seeing people losing their minds to the sounds of the night. Seeing groups break out in unison gives me chills. 

 

🔥LiT: What was your ASSpiration for this mix?

📣DBK: Shake it baby, feel it. 

 

🔥LiT: What kind of butt do you have?

📣DBK: A trouble butt!

 

🔥LiT: Do you have any body image related anecdotes to share regarding your personal relationship to your butt or that of a loved one?

📣DBK: I truly love my butt, honestly it's a thing! 

 

🔥LiT: Do you have a favorite booty type? Kindly explain…

📣DBK: Yes. Megan The Stallion's butt. Anybody who has a big booty, that's my whole aspiration in life to have that big booty attitude. Where it can like, you know you don't even have to do anything, and it just like hits these movements, ding ding ding, ding ding ding. The kind of booty that can bring about that booty action is my ultimate. 

 

🔥LiT: What does a booty/body positive dance floor mean to you as a DJ? 

📣DBK: That means being able to twerk and shake your thing no matter what. Doing what you want to move, having the freedom to twerk that twerk is most important to me. So a body positive dance floor, and a booty positive dance floor, is one that doesn't even have to think about it because it's just lit. Good vibes with sweat and expression. And you know sometimes even violation of space, like sometimes a booty just has to get in your face, you know like it's just Dance vibes.

 

 

🔥LiT: What inspires you to move your butt as a dancer?

📣DBK: Beats. Solid beats. I have a track out at the moment that's a bit of a banger (Ladies of the Dance). Enough to inspire some butt action. 

 

🔥LiT: Any memorable times as a DJ you had to adapt your selections to a particular audience while playing “booty music”?

📣DBK: Never. Okay, maybe some private events but those are private things you know.

 

🔥LiT: What's your favorite booty music to DJ?

📣DBK: I mean obviously booty bass is you know like a standard, but I love the Afro vibes. There's a producer, Gafacci, and he make some really solid booty dancing music. And I think everybody should have him in their playlist no matter what cause he's great.
